Abstract
This paper introduces a vertically laminated configuration for composite beams and investigates its effect on the vibrational behavior of the beam. For this purpose, the governing equations of the problem are first derived using Timoshenko beam theory. Then, by defining the constitutive relations for two types of laminate configurations, including the conventional horizontal lamination used in composite beams and the proposed vertical lamination, the governing equations are expressed in terms of the beam displacement components, resulting in a system of coupled differential equations. Subsequently, by developing an analytical approach, the governing equations are solved simultaneously without the need for decoupling, and the natural frequencies of the beam are obtained. Natural frequency analysis results for both horizontal and vertical laminate configurations under different boundary conditions and stacking sequences are presented and compared. The results demonstrate that, unlike the horizontal laminate configuration, the natural frequency of the beam in the vertically laminated configuration can be controlled and optimized by changing the fiber angle orientation. This characteristic can be of significant importance in the design of composite structures, enabling the development of beams with desirable dynamic properties for specific applications.
